Cătălin Predoiu: We need to develop a defense strategy regarding drones

Published on

Acting Minister of Internal Affairs Cătălin Predoiu says it is necessary to develop a defense strategy regarding drones that takes into account the nature and complexity of this new threat, in consultation with all relevant institutions, including the Supreme Council for National Defense.

“The recent debate in the Senate Defense Committee regarding the danger posed by drones in light of current legislation should be only the first step in Parliament’s effort to adapt the law to the military threats posed by military drones that have crashed at sea, on the seashore, or within the national territory. Legislation adapted to these dangers must be based on several premises, such as the military nature of these threats, the analysis of cases involving drones that have entered territorial waters, the exclusive economic zone, or national territory, the detection capabilities available to all institutions, the logistics, technology, and budgets available to each institution, as well as the legal obligations set forth in current legislation,” stated Cătălin Predoiu, according to a press release from the Ministry of Internal Affairs issued on Tuesday.

According to him, “the Ministry of Internal Affairs will continue to participate in these debates in Parliament, if invited, with the clear mission of presenting to Parliament all the information it has regarding the recorded events, as well as the capabilities and technology available to it or to other institutions.”

“Before drafting legislation, it is necessary to develop a defense strategy regarding drones that takes into account the nature and complexity of this new threat, in consultation with all institutions, including the Supreme Council for National Defense (CSAT), of course. The Ministry of Internal Affairs will contribute to these debates with its own vision and concept for the future response architecture to these new threats and will cooperate faithfully with all institutions involved, based on its own legal powers and operational technical capabilities,” emphasized the acting Minister of the Interior.
