The Chamber of Deputies voted on Wednesday, with 19 abstentions, in favour of a bill designating 29 October as „Queen Marie Day.”
The bill establishes 29 October as a national day dedicated to commemorating the personality and historical contribution of Queen Marie of Romania.
To mark Queen Marie Day, Parliament, the Presidential Administration, the Government, local public authorities, and public institutions under their authority or coordination may allocate funds from their own budgets or other legal sources to organise or support sporting, cultural, artistic, or educational events, as well as promotional programmes, within the limits of approved budgets.
On 29 October, public institutions will fly the national flag in accordance with Law No. 75/1994 on the display of Romania’s flag, the playing of the national anthem, and the use of seals bearing the country’s coat of arms by public authorities and institutions, as subsequently amended and supplemented.
According to an amendment, the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation and the Romanian Television Corporation, as public service broadcasters, may produce, broadcast, or rebroadcast editorial content promoting activities organised in connection with Queen Marie Day.
AUR deputy Ramona-Ioana Bruynseels, the bill’s initiator, stated that through the deputies’ vote, Parliament had „built a bridge across time,” paying tribute to a remarkable figure in Romania’s history on the 150th anniversary of her birth.
„Thank you very much for your support of this project. It is a sign of maturity and wisdom for us all. We have managed to rise above political differences to show our gratitude to a remarkable figure of our history who succeeded in uniting the Romanian nation. (…) Today, through our vote, Romania says to the Queen, on the 150th anniversary of her birth, ‘Thank you, Your Majesty!’,” said the deputy.
The bill, initiated by the AUR parliamentary group, was previously adopted by the Senate, with the Chamber of Deputies acting as the decision-making body. AGERPRES
