The defence committee of the Chamber of Deputies has requested briefing and strategic assessment regarding developments in the Middle East and their impact on Romania’s security, the committee’s chairman, Social Democrat Mihai Weber, informs on Tuesday.
‘The conflict that began on February 28, 2026, through coordinated attacks by the United States of America and Israel against Iran, has fundamentally altered the international security environment, generating systemic instability in the Middle East and an imminent global energy crisis. At present, the security environment is characterised by extreme volatility, with implications for Romania felt particularly at the economic level, through fuel prices; at the diplomatic level, through operations to repatriate Romanian citizens from the region; and at the military level, with the strategic importance of the Deveselu missile defence base increasing, as it plays a role in protecting European airspace against potential ballistic missiles launched from the Middle East,’ the press release signed by Mihai Weber states.
In this context, the defence, public order and national security committee announced joint inter-institutional actions with the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide constant updates on: the development of the operational situation and possible escalation scenarios; potential implications for Romania’s national security; the impact on external commitments and the operational planning of the Romanian Armed Forces; possible measures to adapt or strengthen defence posture; coordination efforts with allied structures within NATO and the EU; measures undertaken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to protect and repatriate Romanian citizens in conflict-affected areas, as well as planned future actions; analysis of the situation from a diplomatic and geopolitical perspective; Romania’s positioning within international consultations and mechanisms; and any potential impact on Romania’s strategic interests in the region.
‘At times like these, it is essential that Parliament is correctly and fully informed. Our role is to exercise responsible parliamentary oversight and to ensure that state institutions are prepared for any development in the situation,’ emphasised MP Mihai Weber.
For matters requiring sensitive information, the possibility of additional briefings in a secure setting has also been considered. The defence, public order and national security committee reaffirmed its commitment to stability, institutional coordination, and the protection of Romania’s interests and those of its citizens, the source added.
