The Constitutional Court’s reasoning in the case of Diana Sosoaca reinforces the discussion on the need for a broad reform of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR), Social Democratic Party (PSD) Chairman and Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Monday evening.
”This discussion must start from the reality that the current procedure transforms the CCR into a court that does not offer the person in question the right to defence or appeal. This is why I believe that between the BEC [Central Electoral Bureau] and the CCR there should be a filter of legality that only the High Court of Cassation and Justice can ensure,” Ciolacu wrote on Facebook.
In his opinion, the only ”rational and serious” discussion in society must be related to the reform of the CCR.
He criticised those who defended ”someone who advocates legionnaireism and hatred against Jews”
”But I have a big dilemma. How much atrophied must your common sense be to loudly advocate that certain parties should be outlawed on the grounds of extremism, but then to make yourself a shield for someone who advocates legionionnaireism and hatred of Jews?! Even in an election campaign, there are certain red lines that must not be crossed. So as not to throw Romanian society 50 years back. I will never get into this unconscious electoral gallop practiced by some candidates. The only rational and serious discussion in society must be related to CCR reform. This is what I will do!,” said Ciolacu.
The Constitutional Court published, on Monday, the reasoning of its decision on the rejection of Diana Iovanovici-Sosoaca’s candidacy for the office of president of Romania.
