Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu declared on Wednesday that it is necessary for Romania to have a special envoy to the United States of America, both from the Presidency and from the Government, who would handle communication between the two countries until the issue of changing the ambassador or other changes arises.
Ciolacu was asked on Antena 1 TV station if it is possible to recall the Minister of Foreign Affairs or the Romanian ambassador to the U.S.
„I am not an expert in changing ambassadors, because it is not my specialty. If you call an ambassador, it might be interpreted in a certain way, so there must first be a dialogue between the Presidential Administration and the State Department, respectively with the Secretary of State, with Mr. Rubio. (…) There are some rules that we must respect. I truly believe that it is necessary to have a special envoy, both from the presidential institution and from the Romanian Government, a common person found who would have this attribute until the issue of changing the ambassador or other changes arises,” said the prime minister.
He specified that he spoke about this topic with interim president Ilie Bolojan and that he should announce, when the case arises, which person will be designated to take over these duties.
„Somehow we have to get out of our narrow circle. For nine years, Israel had an American citizen, a Jew, as ambassador to the US, who was domiciled in the United States, but who was very close to the Republicans, to the Republican family. We have to get out too and have a more courageous, more authentic approach to the times we are living in at the moment,” he said.
