Chairwoman of Save Romania Union (USR) Elena Lasconi maintains that prime minister Marcel Ciolacu „refuses” a transparent nomination procedure and clear integrity criteria for Romania’s EU Commissioner candidate.
She recalled in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday that Romania’s deadline for sending its proposals for EU commissioner expires in ten days .
„The deadline given to Romania to send the proposals for EU Commissioner expires in 10 days and we still only have information from sources. Prime minister Ciolacu refuses to have a transparent appointment procedure and clear integrity criteria. The only explanation is that Mr. Ciolacu wants to appoint, yet again, his firends in public positions. The commissioner does not belong to Ciolacu and PSD [the Social Democratic Party], but to Romania. Ciolacu needs to remember this,” Elena Lasconi said, according to the cited press release.
Save Romania Union mentions that it has submitted an official request for the convening of the parliamentary committees to hear Romania’s proposals for EU Commissioner „so that Marcel Ciolacu does not circumvent Parliament” in this procedure.
At the same time, USR has called on the prime minister to organize public consultations with all parties and civil society for the nomination of Romania’s EU Commissioner.
„August 30 is the deadline by which each member state of the European Union must propose two candidates for the position of EU Commissioner in the next EU executive. The hearings in the European Parliament will most likely take place in September,” USR said.
