Ciprian Ciucu, first vice-chairman of the PNL and mayor of Bucharest, criticized, on Thursday, the statement made by President Nicușor Dan on the occasion of the announcement of Eugen Tomac’s nomination for the position of prime minister, asserting that the anti-party rhetoric is “a bad omen.”

According to him, “independents” are more dependent and far more limited than party leaders.

“We have witnessed the exoneration of the PSD. I didn’t notice any nuance: the parties are supposedly equally irresponsible. Although the political crisis has some well-known architects. I don’t think that’s fair. We continue to witness the fetishization of ‘independents.’ I’m telling you from my own experience: ‘independents’ are more dependent and far more limited than party leaders, who have the strength of organizations and many votes behind them. Anti-party rhetoric bodes ill. There is no representative democracy without parties,” Ciucu wrote on Facebook.

President Nicușor Dan stated on Thursday that the only solution at present is a prime minister who is independent of the parliamentary parties but has political experience.

‘Given what has happened so far and because the parties cannot agree among themselves, the only possible solution is a prime minister who is independent of the parties in Parliament, who can succeed through individual discussions with each of these parties in steering Romania in the direction Romanians want — that means a pro-Western direction, that means maintaining financial stability, and here we have the best possible finalization of the PNRR by the end of August and the 2027 budget,” said the head of state at the Cotroceni Palace.
