Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu says that the main role of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) is to defend the candidates and their right to be elected, „not to be a barrier” for their participation in the elections.
„The decision of the CCR in the case of Mrs. Diana Sosoaca seems, at first sight, in the absence of an explanatory, disproportionate in relation to the fundamental democratic principle of voting and being elected. The main role of the CCR is to defend the candidates and their right to be elected, not to be a barrier for their participation in the elections. I will always support that offices must be won by the vote of the people, because this is the essence of democracy. Therefore, I believe that the CCR must quickly present the underlying motivation of this decision and that it contain strong legal and constitutional arguments. Otherwise, we are talking about a vulnerability of the democratic system in Romania that will impose a serious discussion in society regarding the need for a broad reform of the Constitutional Court,” Ciolacu wrote on his Facebook page, on Sunday.
The Constitutional Court of Romania admitted, on Saturday, with a majority of votes, the appeals filed by two people and annulled the Decision of the Central Electoral Bureau no. 18/D of October 3, 2024 regarding the registration of the candidacy and electoral sign of Diana Iovanovici-Sosoaca in the presidential elections.
