The contribution of the construction industry to Romania’s GDP is 8% today compared to 6% in 2019, up by almost 35%, Cristian Erbasu, CEO of Constructii Erbasu, told a conference organized on Wednesday by the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) together with the EBRD.
„In the last 20 years, the construction industry has suffered because many of the workers have left this sector and went to countries in Western Europe, which needed workforce. Romania also needed construction labor, though, and we were often unable to complete a number of projects because of the labour shortage. In the last five years, however, this sector has grown by almost 35%, our contribution to Romania’s GDP was 6% in 2019 and today it is 8%. We are on the right track,” said Erbasu, who participated in the launch of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Transition Report for Romania for 2024-2025 and the revised BVB Corporate Governance Code.
According to him, the sector is currently benefiting from a number of facilities related to the construction labour force, which have kept skilled workers in the country.
Cristian Erbasu acknowledged, at the same time, that the construction industry has not developed its technological and informational capacity, because Romanian SMEs have not had the necessary funds for innovation in the technological field.
The representative of the construction industry also raised the issue of updating the legislation on waste, in order to improve the waste selection system and to recycle a range of building materials.
