The ruling coalition’s presidential candidate Crin Antonescu said that the missile defense system at the Deveselu Air Base won’t move an inch and will be strengthened even more if he becomes president.
„The Deveselu shield won’t move one inch. Imagine that Romania is the last cottage in the European village, on the edge of the forest teeming with wolves and wild boars. To protect ourselves from the beasts, we built a strong fence at Deveselu. The whole village contributed so that no wolf can get near, but ‘the one who hears voices’ started yelling that we should take the shield down, claiming that it’s a national shame and that the wolves told him they felt threatened. What shall we do, fellow Romanians? Do we listen to the bubblehead and tear down what we have built? I say no way. With me as president, the Deveselu shield will be strengthened. It’s not just me who says it, but also the Trump administration, which has just decided to invest significant amounts in the NATO base. It’s not just me who says it, but our European partners too, who want to increase our defense capacity. It’s not just me who says it, it’s you the ones asking for it, you who can sleep peacefully knowing that the wolves are kept away by the shield. Let me repeat this to be clear: the Deveselu shield remains standing even if this does not sit well with ole’ gramps,” Crin Antonescu said in a Facebook reel.
Former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu declared that if he were to become president, the Deveselu missile defense system would undergo an assessment.
