Dutch Police have detained three suspects in the case of the heist of artefacts from the Dacian treasure, State Secretary Bogdan Despescu announced on Wednesday.
„There has been a permanent flow of data and information with the authorities in the Netherlands. As a result of these activities, three people are currently detained by the Dutch Police, suspected of committing this theft. None of them are Romanian,” Despescu said at the Ministry of the Interior’s headquarters.
He thanked the Dutch Police and the other external partners who participated in identifying the suspects in this case.
„A series of analyses were carried out at the Romanian Police level regarding cases with similar modes of operation, and all data was made available to the Dutch authorities immediately. In this context, on January 27, a meeting was held with the Dutch internal affairs attaché in Romania, during which the level of progress and the steps to be taken in this case were analyzed,” the Inspector General of the Romanian Police, Benone-Marian Matei said on Wednesday.
On January 25, thieves broke into the Drents Museum in the Netherlands, using an explosive on the only exterior wall of the building, and stole artefacts from Romania’s Dacian treasure.
These are the Golden Helmet from Cotofenesti, dated to the 5th-4th centuries BC, as well as three Dacian gold bracelets from Sarmizegetusa Regia, from the second half of the 1st century BC, some of the most important artifacts in Romania’s national heritage.
