Education Minister Daniel David stated that universities must retain the freedom to offer scholarships and student support from their own revenues, wherever financially feasible, regardless of the form of study (tuition-free or fee-paying), throughout the academic year.
At the beginning of this week, the Ministry of Education and Research held a working meeting with the country’s main student organizations: the National Alliance of Student Organizations in Romania (ANOSR), the National Union of Students in Romania (UNSR), and the Union of Students in Romania (USR).
„Minister Daniel David emphasized that, despite Romania facing a major fiscal-budgetary crisis, he has insisted that under sectoral regulatory frameworks universities must continue to have the autonomy to offer scholarships and student support from their own income, where possible, regardless of whether students are tuition-free or fee-paying, and throughout the entire year. Due to current legal constraints, this flexibility does not apply to funds managed by the ministry,’ the ministry stated in a press release issued Thursday.
According to the same source, Daniel David also expressed his commitment to participating in debates and discussions organized by representative student associations to explore ways of supporting students in the current fiscal context. He also stated he would support amendments to the regulations stemming from this crisis, as soon as the country’s fiscal situation allows.
