December 16, 1989, the day that changed the course of history in Romania (Senate president)

The revolution that started in Timisoara is a lesson about courage, sacrifice and the power to fight against injustice, Senate President Nicolae Ciuca said on Monday, saying that December 16, 1989 is the day that changed the course of history in Romania.

„Today we mark the beginning of the Romanian Revolution in Timisoara, a defining moment for the freedom and dignity of the Romanian people. On December 16, 1989, the courage of some simple people lit the spark that put an end to the totalitarian regime led by Nicolae Ceausescu. In just a few days, the Revolution became the voice of all those who wanted freedom and justice,” Ciuca wrote on Facebook.

He recalled the events of 1989: ”On the night of December 16, the first shots were fired on demonstrators. Innocent lives – children, young people, women and the elderly – were brutally taken. These heroes, who took to the streets for a better future, paid the highest price: their own lives. The revolution started in Timisoara is a lesson in courage, sacrifice and the power to fight injustice. Today, we bow our heads to the memory of those who lost their lives for freedom. It is our duty to keep their memory alive and to defend the values for which they fought. Let us never forget how valuable freedom is and how important it is to cherish it every day!”.
