The Minister of National Defence, Radu Miruta, said on Sunday, following a meeting held during the Munich Security Conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, that „the world is changing rapidly, and Romania must be among those shaping this change, not among those watching from the sidelines.”
In a post on his Facebook page, Minister Miruta stated that he discussed with the senior NATO official the strengthening of the Alliance’s Eastern Flank and „Romania’s essential role within this architecture.”
„The meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was an important one for Romania. It was a direct, substantive dialogue focused exclusively on our position and interests in an increasingly complex security environment. We spoke clearly about strengthening the Eastern Flank and about Romania’s essential role within this architecture. I stated unequivocally what I believe: the Eastern Flank means the entire stretch from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, and resources must be distributed in a balanced manner along this whole strategic axis. Romania must be regarded as a central pillar in the Black Sea region,” the Defence Minister said.
He also noted that, in the context of discussions in Munich about current realities, in which „Europe is strengthening its capabilities, NATO remains the central pillar of our security, but nothing is automatic, and nothing can be taken for granted”, „Romania must be stronger, better prepared and more present in the decisions that define its security.”
„Discussions in Munich were direct and action-oriented. Europe is reinforcing its strength, NATO remains the central pillar of our security, but nothing is automatic or guaranteed. Stability and prosperity are built through responsible decisions, clarity and the ability to act in good time. The reality is simple: whether we are speaking about conventional threats or hybrid warfare, old reflexes are no longer sufficient. Romania must be stronger, better prepared and more present in the decisions that shape its security. We have strong partners. We have solid arguments. And we have the responsibility to turn this position into a strategic advantage for Romania,” Minister Radu Miruta added.
The Minister of National Defence is leading Romania’s delegation at the Munich Security Conference, where discussions in recent days have focused on transatlantic security and strengthening European cooperation in defence. AGERPRES
