The deficit of detention places in penitentiaries is 3,500, overcrowding being lower in large prisons and higher in small ones, but this year and next year more than 1,500 new places will be put into use, the general director of the National Penitentiary Authority (ANP), Dan Halchin, said on Friday, according to Agerpres.
„Overcrowding in the penitentiary system exists, it is not more severe than in past years. (…) The deficit of places is 3,500. But things are moving, this year 448 new detention places will be commissioned, and next year 1,075, and in 2024 – 2025 two new penitentiaries will be finalized,” Halchin told a press conference.
As for general hygiene in penitentiaries, he mentioned that it also depends a lot on the inmates.
The ANP official stated that, in the last three years, with the exception of a few specific cases, but not even those confirmed until the end, there are no cases regarding drugs in penitentiaries.
