Romania’s Defence Minister Angel Tilvar on Wednesday in Warsaw, Poland, met his Polish counterpart Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz to discuss the main security developments on NATO’s eastern flank.
According to the Romanian Defence Ministry (MApN), the meeting took place on the sidelines of an informal meeting of the defence ministers of the European Union member states, hosted by Poland, as the state that holds the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The discussions between the two dignitaries focused on the main security developments on NATO’s eastern flank, with Tilvar bringing to attention the challenges specific to the Black Sea region.
„Given the current dynamics of the security situation in the Black Sea area, including the intensification of hybrid actions carried out by the Russian Federation, it is essential to strengthen cooperation between the countries on the eastern flank ahead of the NATO Summit in The Hague in June,” Tilvar is quoted as saying in a MApN press release.
The two officials reiterated their joint commitments to the implementation of NATO decisions, especially in the area of strengthening the deterrence and defence posture, Forward Defence on the eastern flank and cooperation within the European defence initiatives.
At the same time, they highlighted the importance of practical cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries, including within the NATO missions to strengthen the defence and deterrence posture on the eastern flank.
In this context, the deployment, between April and July 2025, of the ‘Carpathian Vipers’ Romanian detachment in Lithuania, consisting of approximately 100 servicemen and four F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, which will perform missions alongside the Polish Air Force, within NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing mission, was mentioned.
According to MApN, Tilvar and Kosiniak-Kamysz also discussed the excellent cooperation between Romania and Poland within the B9 Initiative, highlighting the potential for bilateral collaboration in the field of military hardware production, including in the context of the recent initiatives launched by the European Union.
During the meeting, the excellent level of Romania-Poland relationships was appreciated, as reflected in the numerous joint projects and activities, as well as in consistent support to Ukraine, according to MApN.
