Liberal Siegfried Mureșan, the prime minister-designate, made his first press statement in this capacity on Friday, accompanied by leaders of the parties supporting him – PNL, USR and UDMR. Dominic Fritz, the president of USR, spoke about tensions in society and the need for reform.

• USR supports Siegfried Mureșan’s nomination as prime minister of Romania because it believes he is the right person to lead a government that will strengthen people’s confidence that Romania can have a better future than its present.
• We know that there is an enormous amount of tension in society, tension created, on the one hand, by this political deadlock, which has been dragging on for far too long. Tension also caused by the difficult economic situation facing many Romanians who have suffered as a result of high inflation. And tension because there is a hate-filled discourse which, unfortunately, undermines the foundations of our democracy and frightens many people.
• And that is precisely why we aim to form a serious and coherent government, with a clear and positive vision for Romania, a vision that is not based on hatred, but on confidence in Romanians’ abilities; a vision based on trust in the private sector to deliver prosperity, not on handouts from the state; a vision that once again succeeds in creating communities throughout Romania, where hate speech has divided us.
• We believe that Siegfried Mureșan is the right person for this mission. This mission is far more important than any kind of tactical or political games. This mission is born of our love for Romania and our belief that, if there is a coherent and united government, even a minority one, this country will do much better.
• That is precisely why we will work alongside Siegfried Mureșan on defining this vision as well; obviously, we are not starting from scratch, as a great deal of work has already been done.
• Obviously, in the coming days we will be open to discussions, including with PSD, about the conditions under which it might support this government with a positive vision for Romania.
