Dozens of supporters of ex-presidential candidate Calin Georgescu gathered on Friday in Victoriei Square in the capital city Bucharest, where they are demanding the resumption of the second round of the presidential elections.
The gendarmerie announced that they had detected a person carrying a knife.
„Regarding the information that has appeared in the public space, concerning the fact that the gendarmes interact with some participants in the public gathering in order to prevent access with materials prohibited by the legal framework in force, we specify the following: in accordance with the provisions of art.27, paragraph 3, letter c) of Law no. 550 of 2004 on the organization and functioning of the Romanian Gendarmerie, in the exercise of their duties, the gendarmes have the right to carry out preventive body checks on the person and his/her luggage when participating in public events or in other places where access with weapons, products or dangerous substances is prohibited. This measure has a preventive nature and is adopted for the protection of all participants and other citizens, also considering the fact that, at the last public assemblies, several people were found to have objects and substances prohibited by the current regulatory framework,” the Gendarmerie said in a press release.
In this context, during the gathering of participants in Victoriei Square, the gendarmes detected a person who was carrying a knife, and the case was reported to the criminal investigation bodies.
Calin Georgescu had called his supporters to take the streets on Saturday, in an action to collect signatures for his new candidacy in the presidential elections in May.
