Education minister announces continuation of media education in schools

Published on

Education Minister Ligia Deca announced on Monday the continuation of media education in schools, following the signing of a protocol with representatives of the Centre for Independent Journalism.

„Children and young people need media education and digital media education. The Centre for Independent Journalism (CJI) is one of the pioneers of media education in Romania, and since 2017, their programmes have reached 10,000 teachers and over 240,000 students. Through the collaboration protocol signed today with the Centre for Independent Journalism, we continue media education in schools and hope to reach as many students as possible,” Deca wrote on Facebook.

Thus, the minister points out, in the coming years, every child and young person in Romania should learn how to protect themselves from fake news and disinformation, how to verify information, and how to combat hate speech online.

Ligia Deca said that in the coming years, the Ministry of Education will support the Centre for Independent Journalism in its efforts regarding:

– Training Romanian language and literature teachers, as well as teachers of related subjects, to integrate media education elements into their current teaching, through dedicated courses and mentorship;
– Designing and promoting two optional digital media education courses for middle and high school students;
– Developing and popularising open and high-quality resources for media education.

„This partnership is a continuation of the Ministry of Education’s activity in the area of media education, also materialised through the Digital Education and Media Skills optional course,” developed under the PROF project,” the minister also wrote.
