Respecting fundamental rights is indispensable for democracy, Education Minister Ligia Deca said on Tuesday, marking International Human Rights Day.
„Today is International Human Rights Day – a good moment to remind ourselves that the respect for fundamental rights is indispensable for democracy,” wrote Deca on Facebook.
She urged teachers to educate students on the importance of knowing their rights and fighting for them, as well as on the harm caused to democracy by violations of others’ rights, hate speech, and xenophobic or racist behaviour.
„Dear teachers, teach the children how important it is to know their rights and to fight for them. Teach them also how harmful to democracy are violations of others’ rights, hate speech, or xenophobic and racist manifestations. I thank those who show children, every day, through their personal example and beyond the subject taught, the importance of genuine respect for human rights, promoting and defending them,” the minister added.
