Education Minister Daniel David met on Monday with the representatives of the education unions, who have been protesting since last week, who were informed that, currently, there are no budget cuts, however, to cover expenses until the end of the year, if the announced measures are not implemented, an additional allocation of approximately two billion lei is required.

„Representatives of the unions mentioned their viewpoints and the reasons for their protests and they also presented a series of demands. Minister Daniel David expressed his openness to finding the best solutions regarding the enforcement of the fiscal-budgetary law during and in the context of the public consultations on the subsequent legislation. Moreover, the ministry representatives mentioned that, at this moment, there are no cuts in the ministry’s budget, however, for the proper functioning until the end of the year (covering expenses), if the announced measures are not taken, an additional allocation of approximately 2 billion RON is required,” a release of the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) informed.

According to the MEC release, the union’s demands that exceed the ministry’s responsibilities shall be forwarded for analysis to the Government and the ruling coalition.

The meeting which took place at the Education and Research Ministry headquarters was attended by minister Daniel David, alongside other MEC representatives, as well as by the representatives of the three trade union organizations involved in the protests – the Federation of Free Trade Unions in Education, the „Spiru Haret” Federation of Trade Unions in Education and the „Alma Mater” National Trade Union Federation.

The education unionists protested on Monday, for the fourth consecutive day, outside the Ministry of Education and Research headquarters, demanding the resignation of Daniel David.

According to their view, the Government is causing „an unprecedented crisis in the education sector in the last 35 years.”

The three organizations announced that on September 8, the first day of the new school year, over 30,000 union members will participate in the „Education Rally.”
