The minister of education and research, Daniel David, on Wednesday told the Senate plenary session that the model that Romania has in high school is one that has not produced good results for 20 years, mentioning that Romanian History, Geography of Romania, Romanian Language Grammar and Religion subject matter will be found in the common core in high school from now on too.
„I believe that intelligent people reach bad conclusions if they start from bad premises, but intelligent people also reach good conclusions if they start from good premises. I want to tell you – and please note this – this minister will be the one who will bring back the elements of national culture after 20 years, because maybe you don’t know, but the History of Romanians or Romania, the Geography of Romania, the Grammar of the Romanian Language does not exist at the high school level. (…) The model that we have at the moment in high school is a model that has not produced good results for 20 years. After 20 years, through this reform, we will once again have the History of Romanians, the Geography of Romania, the Grammar of the Romanian Language and Religion remaining in the common core,” the minister told a Question Time session at the Senate.
According to Daniel David, the level of functional illiteracy at the high school level is „too high.”
„The level of functional illiteracy is too high. Intelligent creative children enter and people with too high a level of functional illiteracy leave. Then it is important to make this change. The model we have now, I tell you honestly, the model we have now is a model that cannot continue. We are talking about the History of Romania. I said very clearly – there is no limit to the number of hours,” explained the minister of education and research.
