Election protest goes into fourth day

Published on

Dozens of people on Sunday evening participated in a protest rally in Victory Square in Bucharest over irregularities reported in the June 9 elections, with the protesters demanding the resignation of Chairman of the Standing Electoral Authority (AEP) Toni Grebla.

The protest was initiated by Corruption Kills and the Romania Initiative, being entitled „We want respect! We want a fair vote! Grebla, step down!’

According to the organisers, this is the fourth day of protest for „a fair vote”. „We are outraged by the frauds committed in these first elections of a historic year like 2024! There are cases of fraud all over the country, and the stat, led by the Standing Electoral Authority (AEP), is ignoring them. That’s why we take to the streets NOT for a particular party or candidate, but to protect our democracy! It is inadmissible that a citizen’s vote is stolen, no matter who he voted for!” the protest initiators wrote on Sunday in a social media post.

The protesters demand the recount of the votes where there were irregularities and of the invalid ballots in the polling stations where their percentage is high. „It is our duty to protect democracy!” say the initiators of the protest.
