The ad-interim chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Bucharest was invited to the audience by the state secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Global Affairs and Diplomatic Strategies, Traian Hristea, who „firmly” expressed his special concern about the situation of Romanian tourists returned from this country, the conditions in which it occurred and the non-respect of their right to contact the diplomatic mission of Romania in Ciudad de Mexico, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent to Agerpres.
In this regard, the minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, sent a letter to his Mexican counterpart, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, expressing particular concern over the perpetuation of the situation of Romanian tourists who were banned from entering the territory of the United Mexican States.
At the same time, the Romanian side requested, as an emergency, the assistance of the competent Mexican authorities in order to remedy the situation, as well as to avoid any inappropriate treatment for Romanian citizens in the future.
An open and constructive dialogue was also called for through diplomatic channels and between the competent institutions between the two states.
According to the MAE, in the dialogue with the Mexican authorities it was emphasized that „although the United Mexican States has the sovereign right to decide to grant the right of entry to its own territory, it is required that these decisions are not arbitrary, but made on the basis of individual evaluations, from case to case, as well as not to generate offensive situations”.
The MAE asked the Mexican side to ensure a transparent and predictable approach regarding the regime of foreign tourists, in order to avoid the risk that such cases lead to a discriminatory approach.
Similar approaches and requests were made and addressed to the Mexican authorities through the Romanian Embassy in Ciudad de Mexico, states the quoted source.
