Minister of the Environment, Water and Forestry Diana Buzoianu says that Romania’s problems with the water cannot be solved in just one tenure and probably not even in several terms, but a clear strategy must be made in the area.
„I think it is absolutely essential to talk about the problems that exist in the water area. I understand that people’s quality of life depends on solving them, people’s health depends on it. We have some absolutely urgent problems that need to be addressed with floods. We have already seen why we need better infrastructure and why we need to invest more quickly in this flood prevention infrastructure. In the area of access to water, we already know that there are far too many Romanians who do not have access to drinking water. We also know the reality that even where it is officially said that we have drinking water, sometimes there is no drinking water. We know that we have communities that receive water by the hour. So, there is also this reality in 2025, in Romania. We will not be able to solve them all in just one tenure. We will probably not be able to solve them in many terms from now on, but they will have to be addressed, and a clear strategy will have to be made,” Buzoianu said at the Danube-Eastern Europe Regional Water Forum.
In her opinion, Romania must access the money from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) in the environmental field, including in the water area.
„There is an infringement procedure that must be addressed. (…) I believe that it is our duty, the decision-makers, together with you, the specialists, the private sector and the public administration, to solve quickly, urgently, everything that needs to be solved (…) We will work in the coming period to have this discussion on the control area, on the area of control authorities that will be consolidated, on the PNRR area, where the money that must be brought, including on the water area, must be accessed, the contracts must be executed. I will have a discussion today on developments in PNRR in all areas, including the water area, and you will see more through the facts, because I do not want to give you a speech full of promises. I want us to start working.”
She added that she will carry on the reforms that were carried out and started by the previous executive.
