Over 200,000 volunteers and thousands of state employees have mobilised to make Romania cleaner, Environmental Minister Mircea Fechet said on Saturday.

He participated in the village of Darmanesti, Bacau County, in the eleventh edition of the National Cleanup Day, an event organised nationwide by the Let’s do it Romania! association.

„Today, in Darmanesti, we saw how a united community can do extraordinary things when it mobilises. Together with hundreds of volunteers, we participated in ‘Let’s Do It Romania!’ the 11th edition of the National Cleanup Day, an initiative that reminds us that big changes start with small and consistent steps. This year, for the first time, the Cleaning Day is officially celebrated, after the law, of which I was the initiator, passed. Over 200,000 volunteers and thousands of state employees mobilised to make Romania cleaner,” Fechet wrote in a social media post.

He also said that the effects of the introduction of the Deposit-Refund System (DRS) are already visible to the naked eye, showing that „we have the power to make a real change for the environment.”

„Thank you to all those who dedicated their time today to make Romania cleaner and more beautiful! Congratulations to the Liberal mayor Constantin Toma for organising this action! Together we demonstrate that only together can we build a greener Romania for future generations.”

With the National Cleanup Day, Romania joins 198 other countries in this global effort designed to reduce waste and promote a cleaner and healthier environment.

According to the data with the Let’s Do It, Romania! team, since 2009 over 2.4 million volunteers have taken part in the nationwide greening actions on the National Cleanup Day.
