Eugen Tomac, the prime minister-designate, announced after speaking with the PNL leadership that he would present a government of professionals to Parliament: a technical government, not a political one. This means ministers, secretaries of state, and prefects who are not members of any political party.

Prime Minister-designate Eugen Tomac announced on Monday that he plans to finalize the cabinet lineup by Wednesday at the latest, noting that he wants at least two three candidates, because he wants to present a government of professionals—a technical, not a political one—to Parliament, adding that “this means ministers, secretaries of state, and prefects without party affiliations.”

Prime Minister-designate Eugen Tomac stated after the meeting with PNL leaders that over the past three days he has had dozens of meetings with many people.

“I am trying to form a team of professionally well-prepared people because, as I announced, I want to go to Parliament with a government of professionals, a technical government, not a political one, because we have a series of important decisions to make,” Tomac said.

He noted that “we must also be realistic, taking into account the constraints currently facing Romania’s budget and the deficit targets we have set.”

“It must be clearly understood here that we are not making a concession to the European Commission, but rather it is vital that we bring order to the national budget so that we have more money for salaries and pensions. That is why I have not yet finalized the list for a very simple reason: I want to have at least two or three proposals for each ministry, and I want the decision regarding the minister I will propose to Parliament to be my own. That is why, for only some of the members of the future cabinet have the discussions been concluded; as for a few ministries, I plan to finalize the cabinet lineup today and tomorrow, or by Wednesday at the latest,” he noted.

When asked if there is a possibility of having ministers with political affiliations, Tomac replied: “We have discussed this issue as well. I’ll say it again: a technical government will be based on specialists—people with a solid professional reputation who aren’t affiliated with any political party— precisely because I want—and I will call on political parties every day to act responsibly—to receive a vote of confidence from parties affiliated with European political families and committed to pro-Western values.”

“A technical government, not a political one. That means ministers, secretaries of state, and prefects without party affiliations,” Tomac added.

Tomac noted that it is essential to maintain this approach in an extremely fragile security context.

“I had a very good discussion with the leadership of the National Liberal Party. The Prime Minister presented his views on Romania’s priorities and the risks the country is facing, and obviously, on many of the points he raised, I am in complete agreement, because we still need caution, firm and courageous decisions, and I leave this meeting feeling confident,” he added.
