The head coach of the Romanian national football team, Edward Iordanescu, stated on Tuesday, in a press conference, that the „tricolors” are facing a historic moment, being optimistic about qualifying in the round of 16 of EURO 2024, before the last match in the group, versus Slovakia.
„We are facing a historic moment for the national team, a special moment, facing the most beautiful moment of our careers so far. We are ready to receive this moment with joy, with enthusiasm, but also with great responsibility. This team already has an identity. One of the biggest gains is that we have regained our spirit and identity. These are things that we have earned, which must persist over time, we must not lose them. We have to learn to hold on to the good things”, declared Iordanescu.
The Romanian coach sees Slovakia as one of the best organized teams at EURO 2024: „For me, Slovakia represents one of the best organized teams at this European Championship.
Iordanescu stated that his players were very demanded from a physical point of view in the match versus Belgium, lost 0-2 in the second phase of the European Championship groups.
Romania is aiming for first place at the end of the group stage, which in Iordanescu’s opinion offers certain advantages: „We are playing for qualification and more than that, yes, we want first place. We are still in the first place and we want to finish in the first place if it is possible. We want this because from a theoretical point of view you have certain advantages and I am thinking of extra days of rest, but also of the possible opponents. But the most important thing is to move on”.
Romania’s national football team will play on Wednesday, in Frankfurt, from 19:00, the last match of the group stage of the European Football Championship, versus Slovakia.
The Romanian national team was defeated by the Belgian team with a score of 2-0 (1-0), on Saturday evening, at the Cologne Stadium in Cologne, in Group E of the European Football Championship – EURO 2024, hosted by Germany.
With this result and after Ukraine’s victory over Slovakia (2-1), all three teams in the group have three points each and everything will be decided in the last stage, on Wednesday, when Slovakia – Romania (Frankfurt, 19: 00) and Ukraine – Belgium (Stuttgart, 19:00) matches will take place. Romania is still the leader, with 3-2 on goal difference (followed by Belgium, with 2-1).
