Mihai Tudose brought the problems of Romanian agriculture to the attention of the European Commission. The response he received was a simpler, better targeted budget with an impact aligned with the EU’s priorities for the financial framework after 2027.
PSD MEP Mihai Tudose questioned the European Commission on three important aspects of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP): the budget to be allocated to this area in the future multiannual financial framework, the problems in the livestock sector in Romania, and European support for the modernization of fishing fleets.
In his response to the Social Democrat MEP’s written question, European Commissioner for Agriculture Cristophe Hansen promised „a simpler, better targeted budget with an impact aligned with EU priorities” for the financial framework after 2027.
„I appreciate the promise made by Mr. Hansen, a former colleague in the European Parliament, regarding better targeted support for farmers and rural areas, as well as the assurance regarding the balance between incentives, investment, and regulation. His position on including the purchase of breeding animals among the expenses eligible for European funding is also encouraging.
This is an issue that I have brought to the attention of the Commission through this interpellation, in line with the Romanian Government’s approach within the Agriculture and Fisheries Council, which brings together the relevant ministers from EU Member States.
The future Government will have to continue its efforts in this direction,” said the president of the PSD National Council.
„The Commission is aware of the challenges facing the livestock sector in Romania. There are already several measures that can be used to support the sector. Current solutions for this sector under the CAP, such as coupled income support, sectoral interventions, and investments, allow for specific strategies without causing disproportionate distortions of trade. Romania and other Member States also provide transitional national aid,” according to the European Commission’s response to the PSD MEP’s question.
With regard to the fisheries sector, the Commissioner for Agriculture stated that „fishing capacity ceilings are vital to prevent overfishing. The Commission recognizes the challenges they may pose for fleet modernization. Under the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), Member States can already respond to additional capacity needs, as many of them have a margin between capacity ceilings and actual fishing capacity. An evaluation of the CFP Regulation is currently underway, with results expected in early 2026, to assess its adequacy in the current context and emerging challenges,” the European Commission replied to MEP Mihai Tudose’s question.
