European Agenda | Mihai Tudose: „Romania is directly interested in the creation of EU stocks for crisis situations”

„Anticipating and preparing for crises of any kind must be translated into practice through a cross-border and multisectoral approach,” the MEP pointed out.

The European Commission has launched two initiatives as part of its agenda for a crisis-ready Union: a strategy for EU-level stockpiling and a strategy on medical intervention.

The aim is to ensure continued access to essential goods and vital medical supplies, particularly during crises such as major energy shortages, natural disasters, conflicts, or pandemics.

„The challenges of recent years show us that the EU’s preparedness for all types of threats needs to be strengthened. In this regard, these strategies for building up stocks are welcome, even if they are slow to get off the ground, which I cannot understand. Essentially, it is a question of being able to provide essential goods for citizens in crisis situations: basic foodstuffs, water, medicines, fuel,” said MEP Mihai Tudose.

The Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense highlighted three important elements of the new EU action plan: „I think the promotion of civil-military and public-private partnerships, as well as the emphasis on improving transport and logistics to enable a rapid response in critical moments, bode well for the effectiveness of the initiative. At the same time, the creation of an EU stockpiling network is beginning, based on coordination, collaboration, and the exchange of best practices between Member States,” Mihai Tudose said.

The PSD MEP stressed that „based on the conclusions drawn from the difficult situations of recent years, anticipation and preparation for crises of any kind must be translated into practice through a cross-border and multisectoral approach.

Let me give you an example: a cyberattack can cause an industrial accident that affects critical infrastructure, which can cause fires, power outages, and supply problems in several countries at once. Or, more pressing for us Romanians, is the possibility of a serious earthquake. That is why Romania is directly interested in the successful establishment of EU stocks for crisis situations,” said Mihai Tudose.
