PSD MEP Mihai Tudose: Simplifying EU rules will stimulate the revival of the defense industry!

• “Specifically, I would like to highlight the reduction in authorization times for defense projects. We have procedures that can now take several years,” said the vice-chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense.

• “I also think it is a good idea to create a one-stop shop for the defense industry in every EU country,” explained the PSD MEP.

The European Commission has proposed a set of measures to accelerate investment and production in the defense sector, with the aim of enabling the EU to better respond to security challenges.

„We want a credible European deterrent capability against any aggressive intentions. This requires the preparation of defense infrastructure and the expansion of the EU’s military capabilities. This is what this legislative initiative is about, which aims to reduce bureaucracy and facilitate European investment and financing. Here, specifically, I would like to highlight the reduction in authorization times for defense projects. We have procedures that can now take several years. We will move to an accelerated regime of a maximum of 60 days. If the national authorities do not respond within this period, the permit will be granted automatically. I also think it is a good idea to create a one-stop shop for the defense industry in every EU country. The same applies to the introduction of a European licensing system to facilitate intra-European trade in military equipment,” said Mihai Tudose, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense.

The PSD MEP pointed out that reducing the administrative burden within the European Defense Fund, streamlining the eligibility criteria in the InvestEU program, and facilitating public procurement are also important measures included in the European legislation review package.

„Joint procurement is encouraged to accelerate cross-border cooperation in the field of defense. At the same time, the thresholds at which public procurement rules will apply are to be doubled. This means that contracts worth less than €900,000 will be exempt from the scope of the directive,” explained the president of the PSD National Council.

Mihai Tudose mentioned that the seven legislative acts that make up the “omnibus defense package” are to be debated and negotiated by the European Parliament and the Council.

“I will insist on fast-track approval within the relevant European Parliament committee,” said Mihai Tudose.
