European Commission Representative Ramona Chiriac: Europe will not suddenly remain without gas

Published on

Europe will not suddenly find itself, from one day to the next, in the situation of not having the necessary volume of gas available, the head of the European Commission’s Representation in Romania, Ramona Chiriac, said on Tuesday, at the Annual Meeting of the Romanian Diplomacy (RADR), according to Agerpres.

„Our energy security is under threat, with the war bringing to the fore our dependence on Russian fossil fuels and therefore our vulnerabilities. Energy policy is a security policy. Putin’s war results in a number of fundamental challenges for our Union and this is the reason why we need to reduce our energy dependence on Russia as quickly as possible. And we can do it. With REPowerEU we can accelerate this transition even more,” said Chiriac.

She added that „there is gas stored on the entire continent, the 80pct target has already been reached, which is the target for filling the reserves, and Europe will not suddenly find itself, from one day to the next, in the situation of not having available the volume of gas required in case of interruption of supply from any source.”

In the context of the war in Ukraine, she underscored, „the food security of millions of people is threatened.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs organizes, from Tuesday to Thursday, the Annual Meeting of the Romanian Diplomacy, under the generic „Romania’s Diplomatic Response to Changes in Geostrategic Reality.”
