EXCLUSIVE Christel Schaldemose at Romanian Digital Day: ‘EU digital rules must be implemented and enforced. Romania can become a leader in AI”

Published on

MEP Christel Schaldemose underlined, at the Romanian Romanian Digital Day, the importance of enforcing existing EU digital regulations, such as the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA), instead of adopting new laws.

„The regulations we already have are very good. We need to make sure they are enforced and respected. If we do that, we will have a safer and better online space for users, including those on TikTok and other platforms. Also, by implementing NIS2, the Cybersecurity Act and the Artificial Intelligence Act, we will be able to create a level playing field for companies and become stronger in the digital field,” said Christel Schaldemose.

She also underlined the need to invest in digitization and skills development at European level, stressing that the EU must compete globally through an investment and innovation-friendly environment.

A highlight of his speech was his appreciation of the digital sector in Romania, especially in the field of artificial intelligence and SMEs.

  • „I didn’t know Romania had so many people working in the digital sector and I think it’s amazing. But if I were in your shoes, I would keep this succinct because there is a risk of a brain drain. If others realize how many well-trained people you have, they might come and recruit them. The EU desperately needs specialists in this field. I congratulate you on what you have achieved, but you need to do something to keep them in Romania, because your country can become a leader in many areas. I am surprised by Romania’s progress in AI,” Schaldemose added.

The Danish MEP’s statements confirm that Romania is on an upward trend in the digital sector and could play a key role in the European technological landscape, provided it protects and capitalizes on its human resources.

Christel SCHALDEMOSE is Vice-President of the European Parliament and Chair of the WG Bureau on the Bureau on Digital Transformation, Cyber Security and Information Security.

EP Vice-President Victor Negrescu organized the Romanian Digital Day in the European Parliament.
