Intervention teams from Distrigaz Sud cut had off the gas supply on Thursday to the block of flats in Rahova neighbourhood where the explosion occurred and had sealed the connection valve, however, on Friday morning, following a new report of a gas smell, they discovered that the seal had been broken, the company announced in a press release.
„Regarding the events leading up to the explosion on Vicina Street, no. 1, Block 32, Staircase 2, in Sector 5 of Bucharest, we make the following clarifications: on 16 October, at around 07:08, the Emergency Gas Call and Repair Centre of Distrigaz Sud Retele received a report of a gas smell in the building at the address mentioned above. The company’s intervention teams promptly went to the site, where they confirmed, using special equipment, the presence of natural gas in that section of the building. As a safety measure, the gas supply to the building was cut off and the connection valve was sealed at 09:18 the same day, 16 October, in accordance with current legislation. On the morning of 17 October 2025, at 08:44, the Emergency Gas Call and Repair Centre of Distrigaz Sud Retele was again notified about the presence of a gas smell at the same location. The company’s intervention teams arrived at the scene at the moment the explosion occurred. At the same time, the fire brigade arrived, and the intervention agent from Distrigaz Sud Retele confirmed that the seal on the valve, which had been closed the previous day, had been broken,” company representatives explained.
According to the same source, the company’s intervention teams are working on site under the coordination of the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU).
