Foreign minister Odobescu underlines Romania’s support for Montenegro’s EU accession

Foreign Affairs Minister Luminita Odobescu met on Thursday with Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Montenegro Filip Ivanovic, on a visit to Bucharest, context in which she emphasized that Romania will continue to support Montenegro’s EU accession process.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the two officials have hailed the special dynamics of the political-diplomatic dialogue this year and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening and expanding bilateral relations, with emphasis on the economic component. The continuation of close coordination at European and international level was also emphasized.

„Minister Luminita Odobescu pointed out that Romania will continue to support Montenegro’s European Union accession process, welcoming the important progress made by the Montenegrin national authorities, especially in the last year, in terms of implementing the reform agenda on the path towards European integration. She encouraged the maintaining of the sustained pace of efforts and motivation to move forward in the negotiation process with the EU,” reads the release.

The Romanian official assured that Romania will continue to be a firm supporter of the European course of both the partners in the Western Balkans and the candidate countries in the Eastern Neighborhood.

The Romanian Foreign minister also referred to the strategic importance of the Western Balkans for the EU and NATO, emphasizing the role of this region in strengthening the security, stability and prosperity of the European continent.

„The agenda of the talks also included the current challenges posed by the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the support given to the Republic of Moldova in its European course and to strengthen its resilience in the face of Russian interference,” the press release further mentions.
