The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu, emphasised the strong cooperation existing between Romania and Denmark, both at bilateral level and within the EU and NATO, during a meeting held on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) with a delegation of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Denmark led by the Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee, Christian Friis Bach.

The Danish delegation, composed of members of the Foreign Policy Committee, also included Flemming Moller Mortensen (former Minister for Development and Nordic Cooperation), Astrid Krag (former Minister for Social Affairs, the Interior and Health), Ida Auken (former Minister for the Environment), Helle Bonnesen and Mette Kierkgaard.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the meeting Minister Oana Toiu conveyed her appreciation for the solid cooperation with Denmark, both bilaterally and within the EU and NATO. At bilateral level, she highlighted Denmark’s importance as an economic and trade partner, the particular relevance of Danish investments for the Romanian economy, and emphasised the interest in deepening cooperation in strategic sectors such as the defence industry, energy, advanced technologies and agriculture. The discussion also addressed the instruments available to balance trade relations with third-country partners.

The talks also focused on the significant role played by parliamentary diplomacy, as well as coordination between Parliament and Government in shaping foreign policy, with particular emphasis on the European dimension and the transatlantic relationship.

The Romanian minister congratulated Denmark on the results of its recently concluded Presidency of the Council of the EU and stressed the importance of capitalising on the momentum created with regard to advancing the EU enlargement process, both in its eastern dimension and in relation to the Western Balkans. Both sides expressed their wish to work even more closely together to achieve the common priority objectives of a stronger, more resilient and more connected Europe, prepared for the future, the press release states.

Regarding the international context, the importance of ensuring a coherent posture of deterrence and defence from the Black Sea to the Arctic region was underlined, including from the perspective of effectively countering hybrid threats, the same source notes.

In this context, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the importance of strengthening the EU’s strategic profile in the Black Sea region.
