Timișoara Mayor and USR president Dominic Fritz has told his supporters that he is preparing a “manifesto event” on 27 September, just three days before his term as mayor comes to an end. The announcement comes after Dominic Fritz said on 28 August that, following President Nicușor Dan’s promulgation of the ANI Law, his term as mayor would end within 30 days. The ANI Law came into force on 31 August. He also announced that his team of deputy mayors would take over the interim running of City Hall from the end of September, gandul.ro reports.
Fritz says the event will mark six years since his victory in the local elections of 27 September 2020, adding that the gathering will be both a celebration of the time he has spent at the helm of Timișoara and a response to the termination of his term as mayor.
“Exactly six years ago, on 27 September 2020, we won the Timișoara City Hall election together. It was the beginning of a path that many believed to be impossible.
6 years later, on 27 September 2026, I invite you to the manifesto event ‘Timișoara. The Revolution Continues.’ It will be a celebration of what we have built together over these years. At the same time, it will be a moment of clarity and reaffirmation in the face of a brutal abuse that nullifies the vote of Timișoara’s residents,” the mayor says on his blog.
Fritz explained why he wants to organise this event.
According to the mayor, “when the rule of law is trampled underfoot and there is an attempt to humiliate a city that dared to change the rules of the game, Timișoara’s response is not resignation but dignity, solidarity and the determination to move forward”.
“We have shown that another way of running public administration is possible. Now we have the chance and the responsibility to take this change beyond the city’s borders.
In recent weeks, the number of reactions from all quarters – from people who love their city and country, Romanian and foreign public figures, the international media and European organisations – has been encouraging. At the same time, it has revealed how many of us are willing to continue the battle for a fair Romania,” he further says.
The event will take place at CRAFT (22 Eroilor de la Tisa Blvd), on Sunday, 27 September, from 14:00. Entry to the hall is permitted until 13:50. Registration is mandatory.
