Germany could recall the two ships it sent to Djibouti if the conditions for their deployment in the Strait of Hormuz are not met soon, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Wednesday in Berlin, according to dpa, as reported by Agerpres.
“They will not wait indefinitely,” Pistorius said at a press conference alongside Chancellor Friedrich Merz and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
He noted that it is impossible to predict when the conditions for operations to secure the strategic maritime route will be met.
Germany sent the minehunter Fulda and the supply ship Mosel to the region in mid-June to prepare for mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
However, such a deployment would require an agreement on a lasting cessation of hostilities, the consent of neighboring Iran and Oman, and the necessary legal approvals, including authorization from the German parliament.
“At this point, there is no scenario I can imagine in the coming days and weeks…in which we could enter the Strait of Hormuz to clear the area of mines,” Pistorius said, adding that on Tuesday Iran had sent a clear refusal to France regarding such a mission.
