Government approves solar tax cancellation, updates support scheme for energy consumers

Published on

The government adopted on Thursday the Ordinance amending and supplementing Government Emergency Ordinance (OUG) 27/2022 through which it eliminates the solar tax for prosumers and updates the support scheme for all electricity and natural gas consumers, which will lead to lower prices for the next 12 months, informs the Ministry of Energy in a statement.

„As promised, we maintain the mechanism of capping electricity and gas prices for another year, until March 31, 2025, so that the population, but also companies, as final consumers, remain protected against possible volatility on the elrctricity and natural gas market, in the current conditions of global unpredictability. We are among the countries in the EU where prices have fallen just below the ceiling thresholds and most often we find this in gas bills and electricity consumers with a consumption of over 300 kWh / month. I also kept my promise to eliminate the possibility of introducing the so-called solar tax, because we want to support prosumers and a modern, decentralized, digitized and decarbonized energy system,” Energy minister Sebastian Burduja said.

„We mention that the current scheme has ensured, according to data published by the European Commission, for the third quarter of 2023, taking into account capped prices, not those in contracts, but actually those paid by consumers, that Romania has the fourth cheapest gas and the fifth cheapest electricity in the European Union. The Ministry of Energy will also ensure that the return to free market mechanisms will be done in stages and ensuring a fair price for Romanians. Thus, in the process of transition to the free market, for the period April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026, electricity and natural gas suppliers will publish standard offers only for periods for which they have purchased, at the date of elaboration of the offer, a quantity of electricity / natural gas at least equal to 50% of the consumption of customers in the portfolio,” the release adds.
