PSD President Sorin Grindeanu says that Siegfried Mureșan, the prime minister-designate, ‘appears to be panting’, does not appear to be prepared for the job and, although this is the second time the head of state has designated a prime minister from PNL, the liberals ‘still seem surprised’.
‘When someone puts you forward to be prime minister and try to form a government, and you are the nominee of the parties that went with you to Cotroceni today as well, do you still ask for time to think? Weren’t you the right’s nominee? Or do you actually have to ask for permission? I believe that was more likely what this was about. Mr Siegfried Mureșan had to ask for permission, and not in Romania. This is the second time the president has designated a prime minister from PNL and they still seem surprised. Has this Mr Siegfried Mureșan been training for about three months, since they put him forward, or for a little over two months, since PNL and USR put him forward as prime minister? He has been training on Facebook for about three months. He has flooded us with posts and already appears to be panting, not prepared,’ Grindeanu said on Romania TV on Thursday evening.
He stressed that he would not vote for a government led by Siegfried Mureșan.
‘I am telling you that on Monday I will convene a National Permanent Bureau meeting in the party, but I personally will tell my colleagues that I cannot vote for someone who has betrayed Romania and Romanians, and that will be my proposal. Of course, since it is a democratic party, we will see what the party bodies decide on Monday. (…) I saw the reaction. I believe that all the presidents of the county organisations (…) reacted, saying that we can do nothing other than reject this nomination. But we must abide by PSD’s statute, so we will hold this meeting on Monday,’ the social-democrat leader added.
He believes that Mureșan ‘will go down in a blaze of glory in Parliament’.
‘We had a president who said that we had to do things step by step. I believe Siegfried Mureșan will go down in a blaze of glory in Parliament and will probably receive the lowest number of votes ever at an investiture vote. That’s my bet,’ Sorin Grindeanu said.
President Nicușor Dan designated MEP Siegfried Mureșan as prime minister on Thursday.
