Hungary: The number of illegal border crossings more than doubled in 2022

The number of people detained after illegally crossing the border into Hungary more than doubled in 2022 compared to the previous year, reaching 269,254 compared to 122,239, which means a daily average of 738 attempts, the prime minister’s chief adviser on internal security indicated Viktor Orban, MTI informs, Agerpres reads.

Hungarian authorities detained 1,942 human traffickers last year, compared to 1,277 in 2021, Gyorgy Bakondi told journalists at a round table in Budapest.

In total, there are 2,500 human traffickers in Hungarian prisons, from 73 countries, and they cost the state budget 3 billion forints.

Also in 2022, border protection was ensured by a force of 500 armed security guards and 13,476 civil guards, assisted by 237 Czech, 70 Austrian, 50 Turkish and 30 Slovak border policemen along the border with Serbia, he said Bakondi.
