The Hungarian minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Péter Szijjártó, told a press conference in central Targu Mures, the Mures County on Monday evening that one of the important objectives of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union is for Romania to obtain Schengen membership and that Hungary will do its utmost to achieve this.

„One of the important objectives of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union is for Romania to obtain Schengen Area membership. It is also in Hungary’s national interest and in the interest of the whole nation (…). Along the Romanian-Hungarian border there are 10 border crossing points that can be used only once a week by citizens of the two countries, because you are not a Schengen member state. Once you have joined Schengen, we can immediately have a closer link between our citizens, and living along the borders will get a new meaning, cross-border communities will get a new meaning and new possibilities, which is why we will do our best to have you join the Schengen Area,” said minister Péter Szijjártó.

As regards the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, the Hungarian minister said that his country supports this desire of Chisinau, to which they will offer all their support to make progress on the path to integration.

The Hungarian minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Péter Szijjártó, attended a political forum in Targu Mures on Monday evening, alongside the leader of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania, Kelemen Hunor.
