PNL President Ilie Bolojan stated, following consultations with Prime Minister-designate Eugen Tomac, that a government not based on explicit political support cannot be a solution for Romania. The Liberal leader argues that, without clear parliamentary support, the future cabinet would not have the capacity to continue reforms and adopt the difficult measures the country needs.
“I had a meeting with the prime minister-designate, Mr. Eugen Tomac, during which we discussed matters directly regarding the formation of the new government. I presented our perspective, namely that such a government, which is not based on explicit political support, is not a solution for Romania,” stated Ilie Bolojan.
The PNL president explained that a government without a clear majority would be unable to carry out the necessary reforms, especially in the current political and economic context.
“Having, in practice, no possibility to continue the reforms and push through difficult measures—which the reality we are facing requires, and which Romania cannot avoid without parliamentary support. A government that does not rely on explicit support cannot carry out the reforms that Romania needs,” said Bolojan.
In discussions with Eugen Tomac, the Liberals also raised the issue of European funds, particularly grants from the PNRR. Ilie Bolojan stated that Romania must implement the reforms it committed to as early as 2021 in order not to lose European funds.
“The main issue concerns the absorption of European funds and accessing grants from the PNRR, and for that, we need to implement the reforms that Romania committed to in 2021 and which we have not yet carried out,” said the PNL leader.
According to him, this mainly involves nine laws that must be passed by Parliament.
“It mainly involves nine laws that need to be passed by the Romanian Parliament. We also discussed expediting the completion of projects so that we do not lose the funds allocated for grants, while ensuring that loan-based funding remains a significant portion,” Ilie Bolojan explained.
The Liberal leader also said that other urgent issues were discussed, such as reducing the deficit, cutting government spending, improving the efficiency of governance, and the functioning of the economy.
“We discussed issues related to other urgent problems: the deficit, reducing government spending, efficient governance, and aspects related to good governance and the proper functioning of the economy,” Bolojan stated.
The PNL president described the meeting as direct and straightforward.
“It was a meeting where we spoke our minds directly, without beating around the bush,” stated Ilie Bolojan.
The decision regarding the PNL’s official position on supporting the government proposed by Eugen Tomac is expected to be made midweek. Ilie Bolojan announced that Liberal lawmakers will be briefed on the content of the discussions, after which the National Political Bureau will be convened.
“Today, at 3:00 p.m., there will be meetings with our parliamentary groups. Our colleagues representing the two groups—the President of the Senate and Mr. Andronache, the leader of the Chamber group—will brief the parliamentary groups on the content of the discussions, and in the middle of this week, on Wednesday or Thursday, we will convene the National Political Bureau to make a decision regarding the National Liberal Party’s position,” Bolojan added.
