“I have seen this proposal; Mr. Tomac has contacted Mr. Dan Motreanu, the secretary-general of the PNL, and most likely on Monday, at the beginning of next week, we will have a discussion with the prime minister who has been designated to form the government, so that after this discussion we can convene the party’s leadership body and make a decision,” Ilie Bolojan said Thursday evening on Euronews Romania, as quoted by Agerpres.

Bolojan added that the Liberals have “reservations” about the possibility of a technocratic government succeeding.

‘I would say we have reservations about the possibility of a technocratic government achieving results in the coming period. Why do we have these reservations? On the one hand, it is not enough for a government to be made up of high-quality people with good intentions. It needs unequivocal support in Parliament, because, like it or not, you end up needing parliamentary support; otherwise, what will happen is exactly what we’ve seen over the past 10–11 months. When the government is put in a situation—and it cannot avoid it—where it must take measures that do not sound good, no one will be there to support the government in implementing those measures. (…) A political government is accountable through its parliamentary groups; it has made commitments to the public regarding certain actions it will take—it has a kind of contract with the voters who elected it. a technocratic government will not have this, and given the experience of 2016, for example, the likelihood that things will turn out well is quite low. “And based on these experiences, I am skeptical that it will be a successful government, but that does not mean we will not handle matters responsibly,” Bolojan stated.

He added that the PNL will make a decision after seeing the agenda proposed by the prime minister-designate.

On another note, he emphasized that the PNL will not support a government that includes individuals proposed by the PSD for positions such as secretaries of state or ministers who, in one way or another, are clearly associated with that party.

‘Apart from matters concerning our country, such as staying within budget targets—because otherwise, everything Romanians have endured so far will be undone and we will return to a more complicated situation— aside from managing things properly and ensuring good governance, we also have the experience we’ve had with the PSD during this period, during which we’ve completely lost confidence in everything this party does. (…) We cannot vote for a government in which there are, for example, state secretaries appointed by the PSD, or ministers who, in one way or another, are clearly associated with this party,” Bolojan stated.

The PNL leader further explained that the issue is not about specific individuals within the Social Democrats, but rather the erosion of the foundation of trust in the PSD as a party.

President Nicușor Dan nominated MEP Eugen Tomac for the position of prime minister on Thursday.

Eugen Tomac stated at the Cotroceni Palace that he will propose to the legislature “a team of specialists,” not politicians.
