President Klaus Iohannis met, on Thursday, in Washington D.C., with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Mike Johnson, with whom he discussed Euro-Atlantic collaboration and support for Ukraine.
According to the Presidential Administration, Iohannis conveyed his appreciation for the attention shown by the American Legislature, especially the House of Representatives, for the cooperation with our country and with other European states in promoting Euro-Atlantic security and prosperity.
The head of state welcomed the adoption by the US Congress of the assistance package for Ukraine, which is added to the support offered by the EU and the European states and which will have a „consistent” contribution to the preservation of the international order based on rules.
The president also emphasized the commitment of the Romanian authorities to strengthen the strategic partnership with the United States of America, including in the field of energy security. In particular, he highlighted Romania’s interest in playing a more important role in ensuring energy security at the regional level, the cited source states.
At the same time, the head of state reviewed the recent developments in the bilateral relationship, with an emphasis on cooperation in the field of security, evoking the role of our country as a security provider.
During the meeting, Klaus Iohannis emphasized the complex security situation in the Black Sea region, with transatlantic relevance, and welcomed the interest shown by the US Congress for it. He encouraged the continuation of the dialogue with representatives of the Parliament and the Government of Romania in order to identify possibilities for joint action aimed at achieving the objectives shared by the two countries.
President Iohannis is on a working visit to the US. On Tuesday, he was received at the White House by President Joe Biden.
