Industrial output down 1.5pct January through August

Romania’s industrial output decreased in the first eight months of the year, both as gross series (-1.5%) and as adjusted series (-0.7%), compared to the same period in 2024, according to data published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to the same source, between January 1 and August 31, 2025, as gross series, decreases were recorded in the manufacturing industry (-1.8%) and in the extractive industry (-1%). On the other hand, the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning increased by 0.5%, year-on-year.

Also, industrial output, as series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, decreased by 0.7%, compared to the reference interval, due to reduced activities in the manufacturing industry and the extractive industry (-0.9%, each). In contrast, the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning increased by 1%.

INS data reveal that, compared to August of the previous year, in August 2025, industrial production (gross series) decreased by 3.3%, as a result of the results in the manufacturing industry (-4%) and the extractive industry (-3%). At the opposite side of the pole stood the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning, with a jump of 1.6%.

At the same time, as adjusted series, industrial output decreased by 1.1%, as a result of the decreases recorded in the extractive industry (-2.3%) and the manufacturing industry (-1.6%). At the same time, the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning increased by 1.7% in August 2025 vs August 2024.

From one month to another (July – August 2025), industrial production decreased by 17.7%, as gross series, respectively by 2%, as adjusted series. AGERPRES
