Insurers pay out record 4.2 billion RON in claims under RCA policies in 2023

Some car service and car rental companies charge excessive repair prices, so that the compensation paid to cover these unjustified costs is borne by the premiums paid by the 10 million insured/car owners, say representatives of the National Association of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies in Romania (UNSAR).

Thus, „the more exaggerated the repair and rental costs, the greater the burden placed on policyholders/car owners”.

UNSAR’s comments were made in the context of a press release issued on Monday by the Confederation of Licensed Romanian Operators and Hauliers (COTAR) on the draft amendment to the law on the mandatory civil liability car insurance (RCA).

„We recall that one of the main purposes of the draft amendment to the RCA Law, together with the transposition of Directive (EU) 2021/2118, is to ensure a fair and transparent framework that protects both the rights of insured persons paying RCA premiums and the rights of injured parties, guaranteeing them that they will receive fair and full compensation for damages suffered from stable and solvent insurers. At the same time, insurers paid out a record 4.2 billion RON (rd 0.846 billion euro) in compensation under RCA policies last year. To these amounts must be added reserves of 2.3 billion RON for reserves of 2.3 billion RON for RBNS claims endorsed and 2.35 billion RON for IBNR claims,” maintain the UNSAR representatives.
