Minister of the Interior Catalin Predoiu said on Thursday that the times when life carried on peacefully „in an EU space of almost generalized security” is over, and Romania is now an EU member state that is faced with constant challenges from both the outside and the inside.
„Even if, perhaps, at a societal level, we are not aware of this because, perhaps we, the political leaders, do not explain this enough out of fear of reactions of disapproval or criticism, I believe it is our duty to break not only the good news, but the bad news as well, when they happen, and one piece of bad news is that we live in a much more insecure world, we live in a European Union and in a EU member country that is constantly challenged from outside and from within, including on the border area, in terms of illegal migration,” Predoiu declared at the celebration dedicated to Border Police Day.
He told border police to expect these challenges to get increasingly serious in terms of cross-border human trafficking, immigration mainly, but not only.
According to the minister of the Interior, the priorities police should focus on are illegal migration, human trafficking, organized crime and smuggling.
„These are the things we must keep our focus on and increase our efficiency, practicing our profession based on the same values that we must never forget: professionalism, integrity, patriotism. As long as our activity relies on these values, things will carry on well,” Predoiu said.
He also called for consistent and structured action, and for a high level of performance.
„Let me remind you of a principle we might be forgetting at times. The strength of a chain is given by its weakest link. So, we must act in a unitary and structured manner at a high level of performance, at all decision-making levels, in all branches. Otherwise, if almost all the links are solid and well interconnected, but one or two links are weak, the chain breaks, and maintaining each of the chain’s links solid is our daily job,” Catalin Predoiu emphasized.
