Investments for environmental protection last year represent 0.3% of GDP, in Romania

Current domestic expenses for environmental protection last year represented 0.9 pct of GDP, and investments 0.3 pct of GDP, according to the data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics, Agerpres informs.

At the national level, investments for environmental protection represented approximately 24.4 pct of the total expenses for environmental protection.

In the case of specialized producers, by sector of activity, the highest expenses for environmental protection were recorded in the „collection, treatment and disposal of waste; activities for the recovery of recyclable materials” sector, with 8.706 billion RON, respectively 91.2 pct of the total expenses of this category of producers. They are followed by „wholesale trade of waste and scraps”, with 630.5 million RON, respectively 6.6 pct of the total environmental expenses of this category of producers.

For non-specialized producers, by business, the highest expenses for environmental protection were registered in the „Production and supply of electric and thermal energy, gas and hot water” sector with 4.554 billion RON, representing 49.3 pct of the total expenses of environment of this category of producers, followed by „Manufacturing industry”, with 1.465 billion RON, representing 15.9 pct of the total environmental expenses of this category of producers.

In 2021, investments for environmental protection totaled over 4.114 billion RON at current prices, compared to almost 3.568 billion RON in 2020.

From the total internal current expenses for environmental protection, the environmental areas for which the highest internal current expenses were recorded in 2021 are: waste management with 72.8 pct, waste water management with 10.6 pct and environmental air protection and of the climate by 5.6 pct.

From the total investments for environmental protection, the environmental areas for which the most investments were made in 2021 were waste water management (55.3 pct), waste management (27.4 pct) followed by the protection of the surrounding air and climate and the protection and remediation of soil and groundwater and surface water, each with 7 pct.
