President Klaus Iohannis said on Monday that the Constitutional Court’s reasoning „very clearly” states what happened in the presidential elections and what was the reason for the annulment of the elections.
He told a press conference in Brussels that it is Parliament’s role to take up the proposals of the Venice Commission, to see where certain legislative changes are opportune.
„It is very important to see how we got here. And it has come to this because, in the Romanian Constitution, it is the Constitutional Court that validates or invalidates presidential elections. On the other hand, I hear voices in our audience saying that someone should come to explain what happened. Now, what happened is very clearly written in the reasoning that was published by the Constitutional Court following its decision. There we can read why the Court made this decision. The Venice Commission has analyzed all these issues and, in my opinion, came up with a document that makes, in essence, some proposals on how the matters should perhaps be handled differently, should something similar happen again – personally, I hope that the situation will not occur again. I believe that it is now Parliament’s role to take this document from the Venice Commission, to see where certain legislative changes are opportune,” said the president.
Klaus Iohannis is attending on Monday the informal European Council meeting on defence issues in Brussels.
